Chengdu To Chongqing: Two Cities, Ninety Minutes, Two Kinds Of Day
The fastest intercity link in the south-west, running every twenty minutes from ¥154. The pandas are in Chengdu and the vertical city is in Chongqing — this is how to do both without wasting a day.
Chengdu and Chongqing are 300 km apart and share a dialect, a cuisine and a rivalry that goes back centuries. The intercity line between them runs so often that people commute it, and at ¥154 in second class it is cheaper than most airport transfers anywhere in the world.
The two cities could not feel more different once you are inside them. Chengdu is flat, slow, full of tea houses and pandas, and famously refuses to hurry. Chongqing is built into cliffs at the meeting of two rivers, has no level ground, and looks like a science-fiction film set after dark.

Chengdu East is 8 km from the centre on metro lines 2 and 7. Chongqing North is on line 3 and the loop line, 8 km north of Jiefangbei, and the taxi ride into town at rush hour is one of the slowest eight kilometres you will ever pay for — the metro is the answer.
What each city is actually for
Chengdu is for the pandas, which means being at the breeding base gate by 07:30 when the keepers put out the bamboo and the animals are awake. Entry is ¥55 and the base is 10 km north, reachable on metro line 3 to Panda Avenue. After that, tea houses in People’s Park for ¥30 a pot, and hotpot in the evening at ¥80–120 a head.
Chongqing is for looking, eating and getting lost vertically. Hongya Cave, the eleven-storey timber pile on the riverbank, is free and better at night than in daylight. The Yangtze cableway across the river is ¥30 one way and is public transport rather than a ride. Line 2 of the monorail runs straight through a residential block at Liziba, which you can watch for the price of a ¥2 metro fare.
Weather, and the month you choose
Both cities sit in the same grey basin and share the same damp winter, which is why spring and autumn are the seasons worth aiming at. Summer in Chongqing is genuinely punishing — high thirties with humidity and no breeze, and every walk is either uphill or a staircase. Chengdu copes slightly better only because it is flat and shaded by plane trees.
Language is a non-issue in both, with one caveat: Chongqing taxi drivers speak a fast local dialect that even Mandarin speakers struggle with, so have your destination written down. Metro signage, ticket machines and station announcements carry English on both sides of the line.
Food, briefly, because it is the point
Chengdu hotpot is built on beef tallow and Sichuan pepper and will numb your mouth in the first thirty seconds. A split pot is not a compromise, it is a way to still taste anything by the end. Chongqing hotpot is older, rougher and heavier on the chilli; locals order tripe, aorta and potato slices, and the bill for two with beer lands around ¥200.
How to split your days
Two nights in Chengdu then one in Chongqing works better than the reverse, because the pandas need an early start and Chongqing’s best hours are after dark. Take an afternoon train across, arrive around 18:00, and go straight to Hongya Cave and then a hotpot restaurant, which is what the city is for.
Return trains run until about 21:00, so a long day trip is possible if you are short of time — leave Chengdu at 08:00 and be back by 22:00. It is a full day and you will sleep well, but you will have seen Chongqing in daylight, which is not when it is at its best.
Questions people actually ask
Can I visit Chongqing as a day trip from Chengdu?
You can, and the trains make it possible, but you would be seeing the city at the wrong time of day. Chongqing is a night city — the riverfront, the cableway and the skyline all peak after 19:00. One night is the honest minimum.
Which station is better, Chongqing North or West?
North for tourists, because line 3 and the loop line put you 20 minutes from Jiefangbei. West is newer and further out, useful only if your onward train leaves from there.
Do I need to book these tickets ahead?
On weekdays you can usually buy a couple of hours before departure because the frequency is so high. For the Friday before a holiday, or during Golden Week, book the moment the 15-day window opens.
