Guilin To Yangshuo: River, Rail Or Road
Sixty-five kilometres of karst between the city and the village everyone photographs. The boat is the point, the train is the trick, and the bus is what most people end up doing.
The Li River between Guilin and Yangshuo is the landscape on the back of the twenty-yuan note, and the reason people come to this corner of Guangxi at all. Sixty-five kilometres of limestone towers, water buffalo and bamboo rafts, ending in a small town that has been a backpacker fixture since the 1980s.
Getting there is a genuine choice rather than a formality. The boat is the experience; the train is fast and cheap but drops you twenty-seven kilometres away; the bus is what most independent travellers settle on. Picking the wrong one costs you either money or half a day.

The train looks like the obvious answer and is not, because Yangshuo station sits out at Xingping, 27 km from the town and a ¥20 shuttle or ¥100 taxi from your guesthouse. If you are going to Xingping itself, though, the train is perfect — that is where the best of the river scenery is, and it is quieter than Yangshuo.
The cruise includes lunch, which is worth exactly what you pay for it, and the upper deck costs more than the lower for a better view of the same water. Whatever the boat operator tells you, nowhere on the route is more scenic than the stretch around Nine Horse Hill, roughly two hours in.

The Yulong River raft is the better value of the two river experiences: a smaller tributary, punted by a man with a pole, quiet enough to hear birds, and it drops you in a village where you can rent a bike and ride back through the fields. Bring the ¥20 note you were going to photograph.
Two days, structured
Day one: the cruise down, arriving Yangshuo around 13:30, then an afternoon on West Street and a beer fish dinner. Day two: rent a bike or scooter after breakfast, ride the Yulong loop, stop at Moon Hill if you want the climb at ¥15, and be back in town by mid-afternoon for the bus or a taxi to the station.
Rain matters here more than most places. The karst looks best in mist, and the rafts still run in light rain, but the Li River cruise is suspended when the water is high after a storm. Build a spare half-day into your plans between April and June.

Is the Li River cruise worth the money?
Once, yes. It is the classic view of the landscape and there is no road that replicates it. If you are on a tight budget, the Yulong River raft at ¥150–250 gets you most of the scenery for a third of the price and in a quieter place.
Why is Yangshuo station so far from Yangshuo?
The high-speed line follows the terrain and put the station at Xingping, 27 km away, because that is where the ground allowed it. Shuttle buses meet the trains and cost around ¥20; a taxi is ¥100 unless you negotiate.
Can I do Guilin to Yangshuo and back in one day?
You can, but the boat goes one way and takes four hours, so a day trip means land transport both ways. It is much better to sleep in Yangshuo and return the following afternoon.
